Achieve a Successful Dental Implant Recovery

Immediately following dental implant surgery, you will need to rest while your gums and jawbone heal. Patients typically return to a normal schedule shortly after, but they must return to our office for their second surgery a minimum of two months after implant placement. Once you have fully recovered from both procedures, we can design and place your customized restoration. Dr. Kurt W. Kline can provide patients with post-surgical instructions to help ensure a smooth and successful dental implant recovery. At Implant Dental in Plattsburgh, NY, we use the latest technology in implant dentistry to promote quick healing and reduce your chances for complications.

What to Expect the Day of the Procedure

The day of the procedure, Dr. Kline can administer sedation and surgically insert the implants within your jawbone. Before closing the incisions, he will use growth factors taken from your own plasma to promote faster healing. Once inserted, he can close the incisions with dissolvable sutures. The length of the overall procedure will depend on the amount and type of implants being placed.

After surgery, we can provide patients with in-depth instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

Due to the anesthesia involved, you will need to have someone available to drive you home from the procedure. After surgery, we can provide you with pain medication and at-home care instructions to minimize discomfort and assist with your dental implant recovery.

The Week After Surgery

It is not uncommon to experience some swelling, bleeding, and soreness for the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. Resting with your head elevated, taking medications as prescribed, and changing gauze as as directed can help minimize any discomfort. During this time, we also recommend maintaining a soft foods diet and keeping the surgical site clean to avoid disrupting the incisions and implants. In addition, you should:

  • Avoid strenuous activity
  • Use cold compresses on your jaw to minimize swelling
  • Avoid brushing or flossing for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid drinking out of a straw

If you have any questions or concerns about at-home care, our friendly staff at Implant Dental would be happy to assist you.

Three to Six Months After Surgery

This healing period, known as osseointegration, is key to the success rate of your dental implants. This process typically takes three to six months. During this time, the implants will fuse with your jawbone to create a strong foundation for your implant-supported restoration.

We use the latest technology in implant dentistry to promote quick healing and reduce your chances for complications.

Throughout osseointegration, Dr. Kline can monitor your recovery during follow-up visits, which are crucial to your overall recovery. Because each patient heals at a different rate, the amount of follow-up appointments may vary. To encourage healing, we recommend that you:

  • Take medication as prescribed
  • Keep the surgical site clean by changing out gauze
  • Gently brush and floss so as not to disrupt the surgical site
  • Rinse with prescribed mouthwash as directed by your doctor
  • Avoid smoking and using tobacco products
  • Maintain a soft foods diet
  • Watch for any signs of infection, such as prolonged pain, swelling, and fever

If you are experiencing severe discomfort or notice any signs of infection, contact our office right away.

Second Surgery and Restoration Placement

Once you have fully recovered, Dr. Kline can fasten the abutments to the dental implants. These small devices securely connect your implant to your restoration. Although this surgery involves additional incisions, the procedure is much less invasive and generally involves a two to three week healing period. During this time, we can provide you with additional instructions to assist you in your recovery.

When your gums have fully healed, Dr. Kline can affix your beautifully designed restoration. Once in place, you can enjoy restored dental function, improved appearance, and increased self-confidence, benefiting your overall quality of life.
