Dr. Kurt W. Kline provides mini dental implants at his practice in Plattsburg, NY. At approximately half the diameter of dental implants, mini implants require less invasive surgery, help fill gaps that are too small for full-size dental implants, and can eliminate the need for bone grafting among patients who have experienced some bone atrophy. Like standard implants, they can support crowns, bridges, and dentures. However, unlike standard implants, they can often support restorations immediately after they are placed. During a consultation, Dr. Kline can determine if mini implants are right for you.
Since Dr. Kline began taking care of me, I actually look forward to my visits to his practice.
Like traditional dental implants, mini implants are titanium posts that are inserted into the jaw tissue to replace lost tooth roots. However, traditional dental implants are about 3.4 to 5.8 mm in diameter, while mini implants are only 1.8 to 3.3 mm in diameter. In place of an internal thread component that facilitates an abutment, mini implants have a titanium ball on the end. The ball allows the dental restoration (usually a denture) to be attached directly to the implant.
Mini implants are about half the diameter of standard implants.
Mini implants were developed to benefit patients whose jaws cannot support traditional implants. Though many patients can undergo bone regeneration in order to become candidates for traditional dental implants, this is not an option for all patients, and some simply do not desire it. Mini implants can also be used when the patient needs to replace a small anterior tooth. Some patients choose mini implants because the surgery is less extensive and less invasive than traditional implant placement. While traditional implants require several months of healing time and at least two surgeries, mini implants can usually be placed in one surgical procedure, and no sutures are required.
The placement of mini implants is performed in Dr. Kline’s office under local anesthesia. Patients can choose to receive sedation to help them achieve deep relaxation during treatment. As with a traditional implant procedure, Dr. Kline will determine the optimal positions for the implants using advanced diagnostic imaging. Dr. Kline places a very high priority on patient safety and sterilization, and takes every precaution that would be taken in a hospital operating room.

Small pilot holes will be drilled for the implants, and Dr. Kline will insert them into the jaw tissue before tightening them in place. Unlike traditional implant surgery, a flap incision in the gum tissue is not required during this procedure. Once the implants are in place, Dr. Kline can immediately attach the restoration. Patients can experience restored function right away. With proper care, mini dental implants can provide a lifetime of support.
Dental implants have revolutionized dental treatment. Mini implants allow more patients to take advantage of the technology and enjoy the extraordinary benefits. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact us and schedule an appointment with Dr. Kline.
