Who is a Candidate?

Sedation not only provides comfort and relaxation, but can also help Dr. Kline work more efficiently in some cases. In essence, it is more difficult to treat an anxious or uncomfortable patient than one who is fully relaxed.

You may be a candidate for sedation if you:

  • Have arthritis or another condition that makes it difficult to sit for long periods.

  • Suffer from anxiety, panic attack, extreme phobias or sensitivity to work being done under dental treatment.

  • Have a particularly strong gag reflex, which can make your procedure more difficult to complete.

Dr. Kline will discuss your treatment plan, review your medical records, and discuss your concerns to determine if you are a good candidate for sedation.

How Sedation Works

Our practice provided patient with the following oral conscious sedation options that allow them to relax throughout their procedure:

  • Administer in office oral sedation one hour prior to surgery.
  • Prescribe oral sedative the night before and administer in office oral sedation.
  • Prescribe oral sedation 1-3 hours prior to surgery.
  • Prescribe oral sedative the night before and 1-3 hour prior to surgery.

We typically recommend fasting for 12 hours before your procedure, since these oral sedatives can interact poorly with food. Oral sedatives can make you feel tired, drowsy and have a loss of coordination,  you will need a family member or friend to drive you to and from your appointment.

Once the sedative has taken effect, Dr. Kline will administer local anesthesia to numb the treatment site. During your surgery, you will be deeply relaxed, but still able to respond to questions and commands. However, depending on the dosage, you may not remember treatment at all. You will be carefully monitored throughout your surgery to ensure that you are comfortable and safe. When you return home, you should plan on resting and recovering for the rest of the day. Most patients who undergo oral conscious sedation are able to return to work, school, and other regular activities the next day.

Benefits of Sedation

Many patients choose oral conscious sedation because it:

  • Makes dental implant placement and related procedures more comfortable.

  • Is easy to take. All you have to do is drink a "blue cocktail", making this type of sedation much more convenient than those that require intravenous administration or a gas mask.

  • Is safe. Under the care of our experienced doctor, oral conscious sedation has very few side effects.
